A debut novel of southern terror by Marisa Babjak
Meet smart and sassy Paloma...
a transplanted young southerner whose unique ethnicity is a mix of Polish and Brazilian. Paloma has found the ultimate high-tech job - exploiting her skills in computer hacking, lock picking, and other atypical abilities. Working for one of the nation's top corporate security companies, Paloma uses her skills to help companies guard against theft of company secrets, information, and danger to key employees.
Now living in Seal Beach, California with best friend, African-American Dixie Hightower, Paloma is forced to choose between her dream job and the bonds of friendship when Dixie calls her, desperate for help. An officer in the Los Angeles Police Department, Dixie is called back home for a family emergency, but stumbles upon a situation more dire and complicated than her missing cousin. Dixie sits in jail through apparant Ku Klux Klan maneuvering.
Paloma immediately quits her job to rush to Dixie's aid and she, too, returns to the Low Country - her family home on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. When Dixie's cousin is found dead, the situation becomes ever more clouded. Is the Klan responsible, or another, even more dangerous group? Paloma sets out to expose the true murderers, ironically helping an organization whose motives she despises. It's going to take all of Paloma's expertise and cunning to save her friend...and herself. |

A passionate crusader for truth and tolerance, Paloma is the new worst enemy of the forces of hate. Marisa Babjak, Paloma's creator, writes with courages heart and conviction, as rare in fiction as they are in real life. A fine first novel.
